Stones hurled at church in Navi Mumbai.

The St George Catholic Church in New Panvel, Navi Mumbai was attacked in the early hours of Saturday as unidentified men hurled stones inside the church and damaged the glass enclosure of the statue of Saint George, reports said.

The surprise attack which lasted for just over a minute has shocked the Christian community, while their leaders have strongly condemned it by calling the incident a political mischief, a TOI report stated.
An FIR has been lodged at Khandeshwar police station.
There has been recent rise in incidents of attacks on Christians in the country. In one such incident, a 71-year-old nun was allegedly gangraped by dacoits at Gangnapur in West Bengal's Nadia district after which a CID probe was ordered into the incident.

In another incident, an under-construction church in Kaimri village near Hisar, Haryana, was vandalised by a group and the cross replaced with an idol of Hanuman, triggering tension in the area in Haryana.
