Ambush by militants in Manipur: 17 Army personnel killed, 12 injured

Chumthang News Service,
Chandel 04th May 2015: Seventeen Army men were killed and twelve were injured during an ambush by militants in Manipur's Chandel district today. The ambush occurred when the 6 Dogra convoy was moving towards Motul from capital Imphal.

As per the latest reports coming in People's Liberation Army of Manipur (PLA) and the United National Liberation Front's (UNLF) militants are the key suspects behind the attack.

The insurgent outfits attacked with a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED). The injured soldiers have been airlifted by the Army and were taken to the base Hospital for treatment. After the attack on the Army personnel a reinforcement party was rushed to the spot. Combing operation is going on to catch the militants.

Few days ago a woman was allegedly shot dead by the soldiers of 20 AssamRifles. The attack on the Army personnel today is also being seen as a retaliation by the militants in connection with the woman's death. The district had observed a complete shut down yesterday to protest against the woman's death.

After April's attack on army in Nagaland in which eightAssam rifles soldiers died, this is the second biggest attack on Army personnel.

Manipur's activist Irom Sharmila is on indefinite hunger strike since last 15 years demanding withdrawal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act from the state. But with situation like this it would be very difficult for the government to think over the demand.

Recently Tripura became the first north east state to remove AFSPA while claiming that insurgency has come down in the state.
