Itanagar Bandh: 29 BJP Members Arrested

Chumthang News Service,
Imphal/20 June/2015: 29 members of BJP’s Jan Andolan Committee (JAC) were arrested during Friday’s 12-hr Itanagar bandh given by the party. They were arrested in connection with Itanagar PS Case No.152/15 under section 341/188/34 IPC for violating promulgation order issued under section 144 Cr.PC by District Magistrate, said Capital SP Seju P Kuruvilla.
Capital Police also registered three separate cases against the members of JAC for defacement of public property (vide Itanagar PS FIR No.150/15, Naharlagun PS FIR No.104/15 and Nirjuli PS FIR No. 7/15) under section 3(1)(2) of Arunachal Pradesh Prevention of Defacement of Public Property Act, the SP said.

Elaborate security arrangements were made during the bandh period with special emphasis on market areas and Govt. offices to avert any bandh related violence or untoward incident. Barring few shops, most of business establishments, institutions remained closed during bandh period. All sort of public and private vehicles remained off the road while few state transport buses were operated through police escort.

However, Government offices functioned normally, the SP claimed. Meanwhile, Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has vehemently condemned JAC (BJP) for the capital bandh. Congress termed the callers of today’s bandh “not less than a group of terrorists”.
“They want to put fear-psychosis in the minds of the people and are not less than a terrorist group,” the release said.

“The bandh mostly affected the students appearing for university examination, poor and daily wage earners, and vegetable and meat sellers,” APCC in a release said, and demanded JAC to pay compensation for the loss incurred by vendors. APCC also leveled serious allegation of campaigning at Delhi by the state BJP leaders to stop releasing funds to the state and held the BJP-led central government and MoS for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju responsible for the withdrawal of ceasefire with NSCN (K).

By doing so, he (Rijiju) is planning to terrorize the entire North East and create feelings of hatred and unrest among the people of the region, the party said. Besides, AFSPA was extended to Arunachal Pradesh after Rijiju became MoS for home Affairs, the party said. “Rijiju and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will solely be responsible for anything unpleasant happens in near future in the country, particularly NE region,” APCC added.

The Arunachal Pradesh Youth Congress (APYC) also criticized state BJP for declaring a bandh call while turning a blind eye to “bigger scandal” by its central leaders. Meanwhile, All Nyishi Youth Association said that bandh call given by the Jan Andolan Committee (JAC) led by BJP has no justification.’An Opposition party should raise its voice in State Assembly for the cause of the people and development, rather than harassing the public,” said ANYA president Biri Kakum.
