DIMAPUR: Government of India’s Interlocutor to the Naga peace talks, R.N.Ravi has said that solution to decades’ long Naga political issue was likely to arrive within this year.

When Nagaland Post asked whether solution to Naga issue was likely to arrive by November 2015, the interlocutor said “we are trying. I don’t know about November but we are hopeful that solution will be within this year.”

Asked on the plan to take “everyone onboard”, Ravi said that as far as the civil societies are concerned they are “almost on board” as both the parties have been holding consultative meetings. He said the question now was to take on board the rest of the Naga Political Groups (NPGs) for which Ravi said he would be visiting Nagaland soon.

R.N. Ravi also disclosed that he along with National Security Agency (NSA) advisor visited NSCN (I-M) chairman Isak Chishi Swu, Sunday at Fortis Hospital New Delhi. Ravi said Isak, who was admitted in the hospital on July 5, was in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and has been taking the support of a ventilator for several days. However, on Sunday, he said the doctors have taken off the ventilator as Swu’s health was said to be improving.

In an interaction with the doctors attending Swu, Ravi said the doctors have assured that his kidney was now functioning well and that his blood pressure was normal for a man his age.
While doctors have termed Isak’s condition as “encouraging improvement”, Ravi said that though he is still kept in the ICU, doctors are confidant to shift him in a room if he continues to improve at the same rate. The interlocutor also expressed hope that his health would improve at the earliest and that he would be discharged.

Solution to the decades-old Naga political issue has been on the cards for many years. However, with the change of guard at the Centre, the Modi government has reiterated that it will ensure that solution is arrived at within the earliest possible time.

It may be also recalled, that prime minister Narendra Modi was believed to have assured that solution would be within two years of the BJP-led NDA coming to power at the Centre. Unlike in the past, the Modi government’s Interlocutor to the Naga peace talks R.N. Ravi has been meeting with NSCN (I-M) leaders frequently.

Earlier on May 15, 2015, Ravi had told Nagaland Post that   sovereignty and integration were also discussed during the 17-year long negotiations  with the NSCN(I-M).

He however ruled out “sovereignty” if it was to mean “total independence”. On the issue of integration, Ravi said the NSCN (I-M) had kept it  on its agenda and over which both sides-government of India and NSCN (I-M)- were examining the best possible way to deal with it. When asked about when would the final settlement be made with the NSCN (I-M), Ravi  clarified that the talks would be inclusive of all the Nagas.

He made it clear that settlement was not only with the NSCN(I-M) but that it meant to be a settlement of the Naga issue involving the Naga people.

It may be mentioned that R.N. Ravi has visited Nagaland twice;  the first  was to participate in the 26th general conference of the NSF held in Khonoma village on May 14. His second was with Union Minister of state for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Dr. Jitendra Singh on June 12 wherein both the leaders interacted with the chief minister Nagaland T.R. Zeliang, the legislators and civil societies at Chumukedima police complex, Dimapur.
