Chandel still tense, curfew continues

CHANDEL:Tension is running high in Aimol-dominated villages in Manipur’s Chandel district following August 22 militant attack on Ngairong village which left a person on the spot. Indefinite curfew continued in the area for 12th day on Tuesday.

It may be mentioned here Chandel DC has clamped Section 144 of CrPC in Kuki-dominated Molnoi village and other Aimol villages from 5 p.m. of August 14 to avoid any violent acts. In a formal order, the DC has asked villagers not to come out of their houses till further order.

Militants believing to be NSCN(IM) swooped down the village as residents of Aimol villages refused to join Naga fold. The militant group also gave an ultimatum to the villagers to repose their faith on them which has expired on Sunday. Additional companies of police and security forces have been deployed in the area to deal with the situation. Similarly, Thoubal district magistrate has clamped Section 144 of CrPC in entire district following intelligence input from security agencies on violent activities by supporters of pro-ILPS movement. The order prohibited assembly of five or more persons, carrying of sticks, stones, firearms, sharp weapons and other explosive materials in the area.

According to the sources, supporters of JCILPS, local clubs, local Meira Paibis and hunger strikers in  support of ILPS in the state are likely to storm the residence of local MLAs, block roads and government offices.
