JCILPS volunteers hurt in clash with police at hospital

IMPHAL: A chaotic situation was Saturday erupted at RIMS hospital campus, Imphal after volunteers of JCILPS who were serving the injured and fasting pro-ILPS students and supporters in the hospital clashed with the police detailed there. 

Many volunteers including students injured in the police action. They were admitted at the casualty ward of the same hospital.

The clash allegedly erupted after police personnel detailed at the hospital campus after the volunteers erupted alleging that police detailed in the hospital campus meted out excessive towards them. While they were remaining unhappy with the attitudes of the police personnel shown towards them, a policeman today allegedly dragged out of the student volunteers and kicked him. Highly dissatisfied volunteers of the JCILPS engaged in a heated argument with the police personnel over the matter. 

The matter escalated after police personnel hurled abusive words towards the volunteers and they raised up demanding immediate removal of the police personnel from the hospital campus.

The matter was subsided after a team of police from Lamphel police station intervened and convinced the JCILPS volunteers for taking up the matter with the higher authority for necessary action.

Besides running a helpline centre round the clock at the hospital, the relief wing of the JCILPS has been extending all kinds of assistances to the injured pro-ILPS agitators and also serving those who were admitted after police arrested from indefinite fasting places.

A total of 317 people reported to have sustained injuries while enforcing various forms of agitations demanding ILPS in the state, according to a register maintained at the helpline centre. 

Out of the 317, 18 of them were said to be seriously injured while 69 individuals were now on hunger strike and fast unto death protests. 

Among the injured, 297 were treated at different hospitals and later discharged. One person is still undergoing treatment at a hospital. 

The number of hunger strikers has, in the meantime, climbed up to 69 till today. Among them, 41 have been pulled up by the police on the charge of attempting to commit suicide. 

Fasting was being carried out by 32 people in Imphal East, 27 in Imphal West and 10 in Thoubal district. Among them, 23 have been admitted to RIMS for medical treatment as their health condition deteriorated.   

Nine of the hunger strikers are staging protests at the headquarters office of Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), Keishampat, four at Lairikyengbam Leikai, Khurai, two each at Yairipok,  Ananda  Singh Higher Secondary Academy, Nongmeibung and near Eastern Motors, Chingmeirong, one each at Singjamei Wangma Khetri Leikai, Khongman Mangjil and near Thangmeiband Thau Ground and three at Thoubal.
