6 student bodies memo to PM

DIMPAUR: Six student organisation, Karbi Students Association (KSA), Rengma Naga Students Unnion (RNSU), Kuki Students Organisation (KSO), Hmar Students Association (HSA), Students’ and Youth Council (SYC) and Khasi Students Union (KSU) sought the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and by asked Manipur government to repeal the three bills for introduction of inner line permit system (ILPS) in the state.

In a memorandum to PM Modi through Karbi Anglong DC, the six student organisation said the three bills have been passed by the Manipur Assembly to infringe and discriminate the rights of indigenous tribal people living in five hill districts of the state. The move for introduction ILPS has flouted the Article 21 of UN Declaration on the rights of indigenous people.

The organisations also condemned killing of nine innocent people in the violence erupted as a consequences of passing the three bills on August 31 and September 1. They also demanded immediate compensation to those killed in the violence and said chief minister O Ibobi Singh has to bear moral responsibility for the violence.  The organisations also appealed to striking tribal bodies to raise their voice democratically for a meaningful solution to the issue and not through violent means.
