Justice for Sarita’ collects Rs. 1,20,000

IMPHAL: “Justice for Sarita” Wednesday handed over Rs 1,20,000 to boxer Laishram Sarita, so that she can pay $2000 (Appx Rs 1,20,000) fine slapped on her and coach Angom Lenin by AIBA.

The amount handed over to Sarita Wednesday was collected during a campaign jointly launched by the Manipur Olympic Association and Editors Guild, Manipur.

AIBA (International Boxing Association) imposed fine on Sarita and her coach, after she refused to accept the medal at the Incheon Asian Games.

In the match, Korean Boxer Jina Park was adjudged winner despite a visible dominance by Sarita in the semi-final bout. Sarita had strongly protested the decision of the jury and refused to accept the medal.

A total of 85 individuals from various walks of life have donated Rs 98,527. Some more individuals have promised to donate, according to a statement issued by EGM.

The amount collected through the campaign was handed over to Sarita at the function held at the office of Manipur Olympic Association presided by its president I Hemochandra who is also the PHED minister of the state.

Works minister Kh Ratan and YAS parliamentary secretary M Prithviraj and EGM president A Mobi attended the function.

Sarita and coach Angom Lenin have to pay the fine by the end of September. After clearing the fine, Sarita would be leaving for London for special training session under Olympic Quest Programme.
