MPP slams Nagaland, Manipur MPs remark; ask them to quit

IMPHAL: Manipur People’s Party (MPP) on Thursday slammed two senior MPs-- Nagaland’s Rajya Sabha MP, Khekiho Zhimomi and Manipur’s Outer Parliamentary MP, Thangso Baite, for their remarks suggesting that the “creation of two union territories” out of existing Manipur was the only solution for the prevailing impasse following the passing of three bills with regard to ILPS issue.

Strongly reacting to their comments, MPP president Sovakiran observed that “it would be better for the MPs to resign from their respective posts and join as advisors of the underground groups under suspension of operation with the governments and allegedly backing the anti-ILPS bills agitations”. He said such remarks by lawmakers, representing the people, tantamount to spewing communal venoms amongst different communities living in harmony since time immemorial in the state. MPP questioned the two MPs whether it would be possible to bring peace just by dividing the state when Manipur has over 30 different tribes living in the hill areas, comprising 80% of total geographical area.

Sovakiran has asked the MPs “to refrain from making such irresponsible remarks and not to expose their mean minded attitude and safeguard their own status of respects given by the people to them”.

MPP also warned those who were spreading false propaganda. “There was nothing to do with the demand for ILPS and Scheduled Tribe status of Meitei. It is right that some Meitei based groups were demanding ST status but the demand was raised only recently while the demand for implementation of ILPS was more than four decades”, MPP added.
