Shanmuganathan takes oath as Manipur Governor

IMPHAL: Meghalaya Governor V Shanmuganathan was Wednesday took oath as Governor in-charge of Manipur. Chief Justice of High Court of Manipur Laxmi Kanta Mohapatra administered him oath as new Governor of Manipur.

The swearing-in ceremony of the new Governor was held at the Darbar Hall of the Raj Bhavan this evening at 4 pm in which Manipur chief minister O Ibobi was among the high profile dignitaries who witnessed the oath taking.

Earlier, on his arrival at Imphal Airport as designated Governor of Manipur, Shanmuganathan was received by a delegation of Manipur government led by chief secretary PC Lawnkunga. State DGP, DC and SP of Imphal and Protocol officer and ADC were others who received him. Shanmuganathan was given another formal reception with general salute and guard of honour on his arrival at Imphal Raj Bhavan which was followed by introduction to Manipur chief minister O Ibobi Singh, deputy chief minister Gaikhangam, Speaker of Manipur Assembly Th Lokeshwor, council of ministers, chairman of Hill Area Committee, Dr Chaltonlien Amo, Deputy Speaker, Parliamentary Secretaries, chief secretary, DGP and others.

V Shanmuganathan will discharge his duty as Governor of the state in addition to his own duties as Governor of Meghalaya until regular arrangements are made. 

Shanmuganathan was appointed as the Governor of Meghalaya on May 12 last. He was born in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu in 1949. He joined Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in 1962 and became a member of Bharatiya Janata Party. He was appointed to the defence and research cell in 2003. 

Later, he became the additional secretary to the BJP Parliament office and overseas affairs.  His appointment came as Manipur Governor Syed Ahmed passed away at Lilavati Hospital, Bandra, Mumbai on Sunday after a brief illness.
