ZUF Army Chief brought to Imphal

IMPHAL: Chief of Army of the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF), Jenchui Kamei alias Khanghiamngam Pou of Namkaolong village under Khoupum valley in Tamenglong district, who was arrested by security forces in Assam on October 21, was brought to Imphal on Friday.

The ZUF leader has been remanded to police custody for further investigation, a source said. Jenchui Kamei was brought back to the state capital by an Indian Airlines flight at around 3:00pm.

He was nabbed during a raid jointly conducted by teams of Eastern Command Army Intelligence unit and Assam police at Bina Enclave (Apartment), Hatigaon in Assam just after midnight of October 20. The reports had said that the raid was conducted acting on the specific information provided by NIA, Guwahati.

ZUF is an active group formed in 2011 and Tamenglong is the stronghold of the outfit. It vows not to sign any peace agreement with the government and continue to fight for protection of the interests of the Zeliangrong tribe.

The front stands to protect the natural resources, land and people, and to promote fraternity and assure individual dignity, as also to preserve the unity and integrity of Zeliangrong Inpui, Chiru and other minority groups bound by territorial jurisdiction.
