48-hour UNC bandh begins

IMPHAL:Normal life across the Naga dominated hill districts of Manipur was hit on the first day of United Naga Council (UNC) sponsored 48-hour bandh that began from Thursday midnight.

The bandh has been called in all hill districts of Manipur in continuation of its previous demands and democratic movement, saying all frontal organization would never compromise any attempts to sabotage the final political settlement based on ‘unique history of the Nagas.

Besides affecting normal life, the bandh also crippled the two main national highways-- NH-37 and NH-2.

According to reports, around 100 goods laden trucks were stranded at Jiribam bordering Tamenglong along NH-37.  On NH-2, around 20 vehicles were stranded at Mao even as many more vehicles were reportedly stranded in Nagaland side.

Bandh supporters under the aegis of the Chandel Naga Peoples’ Organization (CNPO) imposed the bandh by taking on the road along the highway. They blocked vehicular movement at Lamkang Khunou and Liwaching villages on the highway since early morning.

As per reports, the bandh was partially successful in Churachandpur district and Sadar hills.
