CBI to reopen fake encounter case

IMPHAL:Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is likely to re-open the fake encounter case in Manipur in the aftermath of the confessional statement of a police head constable Th Herojit where he dragged Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and other senior police officials into the row saying that he had gunned down the insurgent leader in a fake encounter at their directions Khwairamband Bazar.


Sources here informed that an inspector general of police (IGP) of the investigation agency will arrive in Imphal on Tuesday to take the stock of the situation after the head constable made the sensational statement before the CNN-IBN and a local court and media.
Sources say the CBI IGP will meet a cross section of people to take their views to reopen the case of the alleged fake encounter on July 23, 2009. Notably, the CBI has already filed the chargesheet of the case in a local court here.

On the other hand, the mother of former PLA cadre Ch Sanjit Meitei had on Friday written to the CBI urging them for a fresh probe, days after head constable Herojit “confessed” on CNN-IBN and other national media that the insurgent activist was killed in a fake encounter.

The visit of the IGP was barely a day after Manipur BJP President Th Chaoba has demanded resignation of chief minister Ibobi Singh and suspension of Imphal West SP AK Jhalajit at a news conference on Sunday after his week-long camping in New Delhi.

Meanwhile, civil organizations, NGOs and various joint action committees formed against fake encounter killings have convened a public meeting  in Imphal’s THAU ground on February 5 under the initiative of Threaten Indigenous People’s Society (TIPS).

The meeting will take up the action plan on the basis of the confession of the head constable  on his involvement in killing more than 100 people in similar fake counter, said TIPS president W Ananda said.

Leaders and representatives of various civic organizations working for the protection of human rights, NGOs and joint action committees which were formed on various alleged fake encounters will attend the meeting.
