IMPHAL: More than three Lakhs of Manipuris on Saturday took part in a mass rally in Imphal demonstrating the unity of the people in protecting the territorial integrity of Manipur. The mass rally, organized by a committee of various pressure groups in Manipur, began from THAU ground and converged at the main stadium of the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex, Imphal. The leaders of various organizations pointed out that “some divisive forces” have been constantly playing divide and rule to put at stake the harmonic co-existence of different communities of the state.

The meeting adopted a four-point resolution at the concluding part. To urge the neighbouring states not to interfere into the internal affairs of Manipur was one of the four resolutions.

The meeting also resolved that the people of Manipur would always stand for the territorial integrity of the state. United Committee Manipur, All Manipur United Clubs Organization and Committee of Civil Societies, Kangleipak took main role in the organization of the rally.

During the rally, streets and market places in the entire Imphal city and its outskirt wore deserted look as people of all works of life joined the rally. However, buses and other vehicles in which people from various places of the state filled the streets in and around THAU ground and Khuman Lampak Sports Complex.

A good number of police deployed to check if any untoward incident happened had a hard time to manage the traffic when the vehicles converged at THAU ground.

Organizers estimated that over two lakhs people belonging to different communities participated in the rally.  Even though educational institutions were opened no class was conducted as students joined the rally.

Leaders and workers of various political parties including the ruling Congress and BJP also took part in the rally. State Congress leader taking part in the rally said that they were participating in the rally only to reaffirm party’s stand. BJP Manipur state president Th Chaoba, who led party workers, also spoke at the rally. He said BJP always stood for the territorial integrity of the state.
Earlier, in his key note address, joint convenor of organizing committee YK Diren alleged that some narrow minded people in collusion with external forces were trying to disintegrate the territorial boundary of Manipur.

He talked at length on the continuous trend of unrest situation in the state owing an unclear stand of the government of India on the peace talk with the NSCN(I-M). Asserting that though people of the state spoke different languages, follow different religions, he said they had a long shared history and have stood united against external aggressions.
