Women’s body demands removal of security forces

IMPHAL: Rongmei Lu Phua (Rongmei Women’s Organization) -Assam, Manipur and Nagaland has Tuesday alleged gross violation of human rights by security forces in Manipur’s Noney district and demanded immediate removal of Sikh Regiment stationed at Namkaolong part-1 village in Khoupum Valley.

“The personnel of the Sikh Regiment posted at Namkaolong (under Noney district) tortured and harassed a former rifleman of 14 Assam Rifles on the pretext of having link with underground group,” RLP  president Panti Golmei alleged. 

Addressing a news conference at Manipur Press Club, Golmei said that one Aku, a former rifleman in the 14 Assam Rifles based was detained the whole day without any food and even forced to hold an AK-47 for photograph to make him look like an underground cadre. On earlier occasion also security personnel accused him of being an underground cadre when he failed to produce his identity card, she alleged. 

Such act of the Indian army created a sense of alienation and frustration among the villagers of Khoupum Valley, said Golmei while demanding immediate removal of the Sikh Regiment from Khoupum area.

She further threatened to launch various forms of agitation if the demand is not fulfilled at the earliest.
