Public hearing on violence against women held

IMPHAL:  A public hearing on violence against women in Manipur was organized by Women Action for Development (WAD) in Imphal on November 19.

Th. Surbala, Retired District and Session Judge, Prof. N. Pramodini, Director, Women’s Study Centre, Manipur University, Dr. N. Pramod, Associate Professor of LMS Law College, and Th. Bandana, Assistant Public Prosecutor, Government of Manipur presided over the public hearing as jury members.

16 cases – 8 rapes, 4 rapes and murder, 2 suspicious deaths, 1 murder, and one attempt to rape were – presented at the public hearing, WAD secretary, Sobita Mangsatabam informed in a press release.

In the keynote address, Sobita Mangsatabam informed that the public hearing encourages seeking collective effort to advance gender equality and also to combat violence against women. The public hearing, she added, wants to ensure international standards such as the international women’s treaty, the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Violence and Discrimination against Women, and the Platform for Action of the Beijing Fourth World Conference on Women.

“We believe that the government particularly criminal justice institutions should lead to bridge the confidence of those people who have faith in these institutions,” she expressed. “By listening to the narratives of violence against women can make sure that the needs of the victims of violence against women are addressed and their rights are protected through the passage of laws.”

She stressed on the need for observations and recommendations of the jury members to translate the narratives of crimes against women into action and to reach the ears of the authorities.

Three representatives from Manipur Police presented overall cases in respect of violence against women that have been registered at various police stations in the State.

The public hearing concluded with the observation and recommendations by the respective members of the jury.
