Meghalaya CM welcomes NPP’s decision to withdraw resolution against speaker

SHILLONG: While welcoming the decision of Nationalist People’s Party (NPP) legislator, James K Sangma to withdraw the resolution on the removal of the Assembly Speaker, Chief Minister said that good sense have finally prevailed to allow deliberations during the current winter session to have some kind of positive outcome for the larger interest of the people of the State.

“We would want that the deliberations in this August House must have a positive outcome. That is what people are looking at. Unlike in the past, the deliberations and debates in the August House are now available with the people,” Chief Minister said while talking to newsmen here on Friday.

He said that with a very short session, it is very important to see that these three days are use productively for the larger good of the State.

“We are going to seek our mandate again before the people as respective political parties. We have reasons to tell people why we should have faith in the whole democratic system and have confidence in the leadership of the State. We have leaders from across the political spectrum and people are looking at each one of us. Everyone has the responsibility towards the State and towards the beloved people of the State,” Dr Mukul said.

When asked about the absence of MLAs in the session, he said that various MLAs are busy auditing in the respective constituencies on the promises made and how far they have achieved.

“With elections just round the corner, that is the expected activities of the MLAs,” Chief Minister added.

Earlier on Thursday, NPP legislator James Sangma said that one of the reasons for serving the resolution to remove the Speaker was that he had delayed in convening the session.

“However, when we served the resolution on November 21, no session was called, and now we have decided to withdraw the resolution since the session has already been convened by the Speaker,” James said, citing the reason for serving the resolution.

He also said that after the informal discussion with the opposition members on Thursday, he decided to withdraw the resolution.
