Modi gov't critised as RTI exposes spend of Rs 3,755 crore on ads and publicity

NEW DELHI: The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi and his government have come under scrutiny for supposedly spending close to Rs 3,755 crore over a three and half years period.

According to reports, the amount was total cost of the Modi government's spend on publicity until October 2017.

This was revealed by an RTI reply by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry on Friday.
Greater Noida-based social activist Ramveer Tanwar had earlier filed an application to the Ministry requesting the information.

In response to his application, the RTI revealed that expenditure on advertisements from April 2014 to October 2017 through electronic, print media and outdoor publicity is Rs 37,54,06,23,616.

The report indicated that the spend was spread across electronic media advertisements such as community radio, digital cinema, Doordarshan, Internet, SMS and TV, which received over Rs 1,656 crore  of total spend.

Contrastingly, on print media, the Modi government spent more than Rs 1,698 crore and over Rs 399 crore on outdoor advertisements, which include hoardings, posters, booklets and calendars.

The ministry gave a break up of the expenditure according to which Rs 448 crore was spent from June 1, 2014 to March 31, 2015, and Rs 542 crore and Rs 120 crore spent from April 1, 2015 to March 31, 2016 and April 1, 2016 to August 31, 2016 respectively.

Public outrage has arisen over the amount of spend as it is in way more that the yearly budget allocated to some key ministries and government’s flagship programmes.

In contrast of the spend on publicity, government has only allocated, Rs 56.8 crore towards "pollution abatement" over the past three years.


Even more so, many members of the public are outraged because, the BJP and Congress had earlier criticised the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi for spending Rs 526 crore on advertising its achievements in 2015.
