Opium worth Rs 50 lakh seized in Manipur

The two drug smugglers arrested with 20 kg of opium by Jiribam police on Sunday.
IMPHAL: Manipur police on Sunday arrested two persons along with 20 kilogram of opium valued at around Rs 50 lakh in the  local market, a police source said.
The two arrested persons were identified as- Montes Prasad (27) from Bihar’s Tikapur village and Manoj Kumar Gupta (32) of Rahatpur village from Bihar.
The opium was found in a Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire brand car (MN01S-6274) coming from Imphal towards Jiribam along NH-37 during a check by a team of police in Jiribam district, the source said.
A team of personnel of anti-drug cell of the Jiribam district police who have been on alert on movement of habitual smugglers on NH-37 detained the two persons after a daring chase.
The police said that the team on frisking and checking duty near Chandrapur Oil Pump came across the car at the checking point and signalled it to stop.
However, paying no attention to the signal, the car speeded towards Jiribam town after which the team immediately alerted all the police check points ahead while in pursuit of the car
Personnel at Jiribam police station who swung into action in front of the station stopped the car and detained the two occupants.
While they were verified by the personnel of the station, the anti-drug team reached there and conducted a thorough check to the car and detected two packets of 10 kg each opium concealed underneath the right and left footboard of the vehicle.
During spot interrogation, the police learnt that the contraband item was picked up by the duo from a person from Kangpokpi district and being transported to Silchar to be  handed over to another person.The approximate value of the opium would be around Rs 50 lakh.
Jiribam police has lodged a case against the arrested duo and investigation ison to find out the smuggling racket,  police added.
The seizure of the opium was barely a day after the Narcotic and Affairs of Border (NAB) of Manipur police busted a heroin manufacturing factory in Thoubal district and seized brown sugar (heroin) worth around Rs 100 crore in the international market on Saturday.
Another team of NAB had also arrested three persons along with 5.463 kg of opium worth around Rs five lakhs in Kakching district bordering Chandel on Saturday.
