Biren seeks media support for ‘war on drugs’


IMPHAL: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Monday sought the support of media fraternity in his government’s initiative on “war against drugs”.
The chief minister, who attended the 46th foundation day celebration of All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) held at Manipur Press Club, Imphal, also reminded that ‘Media is the fourth estate of democracy.’ 
“Drug menace and alcoholism among the youths in the state is alarming,” Singh said and urged the media fraternity to support to his government’s initiative on ‘war against drugs’. 
Media’s role to check the menace of drug and alcoholism is very crucial and government’s mission to free the state from drug abuse can be succeeded if media extended its cooperation to the government agencies, he said.
Regarding the lifting of liquor prohibition in Manipur, the chief minister appealed the AMWJU, media houses and others to organise seminar, awareness campaign etc to discuss the pros and cons of lifting of liquor prohibition in the state.
The chief minister added that his government welcomes constructive and positive criticism by the media for the development of the state. 
The chief minister also assured that the government would extend all possible help for the welfare of the working journalists and added that the government was extending Chief Minister’s Hakshelgi Tengbang (CMHT) to all the working journalists of the state.
Singh further assured that the government would look to increase the pension money under the existing Manipur State Journalists Pension Scheme.
Earlier, AMWJU president, Kakchingtabam Bijoy maintained that working journalist should be united and work together to fight against external pressure. 
He narrated various problems faced by the journalists while executing their task in the state. 
On the occasion, the chief minister distributed prizes to the winner and runner-up of the 9th Annual Sports Meet of the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union held during Yaoshang (Holi Festival) 2019. 
President of Manipur Hills Journalists’ Union Ramkung Pamei and president of Editor’s Guild Khogendra Khomdram werealso attended the AMWJU’s foundation day celebration.
